Calculating Paintable Area
The tool determines the total wall perimeter and multiplies it by the ceiling height. Crucially, it then subtracts the square footage of doors and windows, providing the net "paintable area." You can estimate a single room or add multiple rooms for a whole-house project.
Key Factors in Paint Estimating
- Surface Texture: Texas homes frequently feature heavily textured walls (like knockdown, orange peel, or skip trowel). Textured surfaces have more physical surface area than flat drywall, meaning they absorb more paint and require a lower coverage rate (e.g., 300 sq ft per gallon instead of 350-400).
- Number of Coats: High-quality finishes usually require at least two coats for proper color depth and durability. Changing from a dark color to a light color may require three coats or a dedicated primer.
- Primer: New drywall (Level 4 or 5 finish) absorbs paint rapidly. A coat of PVA primer seals the drywall, reducing the amount of more expensive topcoat paint required.
Cost Optimization
