How to Use the Roofing Calculator

Accurate roofing estimates are crucial to ensure you order enough materials without eating into your profit margins with excessive waste. Our Roofing Estimator helps contractors compute the total number of roofing squares and bundles required for a job.

Understanding Roofing Squares

In the roofing industry, materials are measured in "squares." One roofing square equals exactly 100 square feet of roof area. Depending on the material, a square is typically made up of multiple bundles. For example, standard architectural shingles usually require 3 bundles per square.

The Importance of Pitch and Waste

  • Roof Pitch: The pitch (or slope) of a roof significantly increases the actual surface area compared to the flat footprint of the house. For example, a steep 12/12 pitch has about 41% more surface area than a flat roof covering the same ground footprint.
  • Waste Factor: Hips, valleys, ridges, and starter strips require cutting materials, which creates waste. A simple gable roof might only need a 10% waste factor, while a complex roof with multiple hips and valleys might need 15% to 20% waste. Texas coastal properties subject to strict hurricane codes may also require specific starter and ridge products.

Calculator Limitations

This tool provides a rapid material estimate based on average multipliers. It calculates field shingles and basic underlayment. For a comprehensive bid, you must also estimate ridge cap, starter shingles, drip edge, flashing, ice and water shield, fasteners, ventilation, tear-off labor, and dumpster fees.
