How to Use the Drywall Calculator

Ordering the correct amount of gypsum board (drywall), mud, and tape is essential to keep your hanging and finishing crews moving without interruption. Our Drywall Calculator helps estimate the primary materials needed for standard wall and ceiling installations.

Understanding Sheet Sizes

While 4'x8' (32 sq ft) sheets are standard for DIY and small renovations, professional drywallers often prefer 4'x10' (40 sq ft) or 4'x12' (48 sq ft) sheets for larger walls. Using longer sheets reduces the number of seams that need to be taped and floated, significantly cutting down finishing labor. Our calculator allows you to select your preferred sheet size.

Drywall Types and Texas Building Codes

  • Standard 1/2" Board: Used for the majority of residential interior walls.
  • Type X Fire-Rated (5/8"): Denser and thicker. Commonly required by Texas residential codes for walls and ceilings separating an attached garage from living spaces.
  • Moisture-Resistant (Greenboard): Utilized in damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms as a backing for tile or high-humidity exposure.

Estimating Mud and Screws

In addition to the boards themselves, finishing requires joint compound (mud) and fasteners. As a general rule of thumb, you will need approximately one box/bucket (4.5 gallons) of premixed joint compound for every 100 square feet of drywall to achieve a standard Level 4 finish. You will also need roughly 1 pound of drywall screws for every 1.5 sheets installed.
